GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is an amino acid that functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain. GABA is synthesized in the brain from another amino acid, glutamate, and functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter meaning that it blocks excitatory nerve impulses.
